Celebrating an Unsung Hero in the Fight Against Blindness

Oct 22, 2026 | news |

Extraordinary generosity has helped restore sight to more than 600,000 people and strengthen eye care systems for generations to come.

On World Sight Day, October 8, Cure Blindness Project announced the creation of the Unsung Hero Award, a new honor created to recognize a transformative supporter whose extraordinary generosity and enduring commitment have helped change the course of global eye health.

The award was created to honor an individual who has chosen to remain anonymous, yet whose impact is anything but unseen. Through sustained philanthropy, this remarkable supporter has helped restore sight, strengthen health systems, and transform lives on a scale few individuals ever achieve. The Unsung Hero Award celebrates not only the extraordinary results of this generosity, but also the quiet leadership behind them.

In the past three years alone, the donor’s support has helped cure the blindness of more than 600,000 people, representing more than 3% of the estimated 17 million people worldwide who are currently blind from cataracts.

Behind every surgery is a life changed. Restored sight can help a parent care for their children, a student return to school, a teacher rediscover the joy of reading, or a family member regain independence. For people living with avoidable blindness, access to sight-restoring surgery opens the door to renewed opportunity and a brighter future.

The donor’s impact extends well beyond individual surgeries. Their support has helped expand access to quality eye care in underserved communities, strengthen eye care facilities, and train eye care professionals across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. These investments build local expertise and stronger health systems, helping ensure that more people can access the care they need for years to come.

The award celebrates the power of sustained philanthropy to create lasting change—not only by restoring sight today, but also by equipping local professionals and health systems to deliver care for generations.

“Eliminating avoidable blindness is not the work of one organization or one individual,” Overbey says. “It takes skilled health professionals, strong local partners and people who believe that where someone is born should not determine whether they can see.”

At Cure Blindness Project, we are grateful for the supporters, partners, and eye care professionals who make this work possible. The Unsung Hero Award is a reminder that when generosity is paired with long-term commitment, its impact reaches far beyond a single moment or procedure.

Every person whose blindness is cured represents a life opened to greater possibility. Together, we can continue building a world where avoidable blindness does not have to define anyone’s future.
