Restoring Sight, Renewing Hope: Asma’s Journey Back to School

As children around the world prepare to head back to school, many are excited to reunite with friends, meet new teachers, and begin a new year of learning. But for millions of children living with treatable vision loss, education remains out of reach. Without access to eye care, conditions like cataracts can force children out of the classroom, limiting their opportunities and their futures. For 10-year-old Asma in Ethiopia, a sight-restoring surgery made it possible to return to school—and reclaim the childhood she had been missing.

Asma and her father, Mekasha Asnake, traveled about 125 kilometers from Tenta Woreda to Boru Meda Hospital in Dessie in search of help for the condition that had gradually taken away her sight. Through the Cure Blindness Project outreach program, that journey became the first step toward restoring Asma’s vision—and her future.

For two years, Asma lived with cataracts in both eyes. As her vision steadily worsened, everyday tasks became increasingly difficult. Eventually, she was forced to leave school in Grade 2, putting her education and childhood experiences on hold.

Recalling those challenging years, her father described how the condition affected his daughter and their family.

Determined to find help, Mekasha first sought treatment at a local clinic near their home in the Ajibar area. Health professionals there recognized the seriousness of Asma’s condition and referred her to Boru Meda Hospital for specialized care.

A month before her surgery, Asma was screened by the Cure Blindness Project team at the hospital, where she was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts and scheduled for surgery. The procedures were successfully performed by Dr. Tolosa Tuffa, whose expertise restored sight in both of Asma’s eyes.

The results were life-changing.

After the surgeries, Asma regained clear vision, bringing immense joy and relief to her family. Tasks that had once been impossible are now part of her daily life again. She can move about confidently, take part in activities she enjoys, and, most importantly, look forward to returning to school.

Expressing his gratitude, Mekasha thanked the Cure Blindness Project, Dr. Tolosa Tuffa, and the medical team whose care transformed his daughter’s life.

For Asma and her family, the successful cataract surgeries represent more than restored sight—they symbolize renewed hope and new opportunities. With her vision recovered, Asma can once again pursue her education, enjoy her childhood, and dream of a brighter future filled with possibilities.
