Dr. John Welling began his work with the Himalayan Cataract Project as a medical student, researching the economic impact of sight-restoring cataract surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa, in partnership with the UN Millennium Villages Project.
After completion of undergraduate work at Brigham Young University, Dr. Welling completed his medical training and ophthalmology residency at The Ohio State University and a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at Emory University. He then completed a one year International Fellowship through the Himalayan Cataract Project / University of Utah Moran Eye Center.
Dr. Welling travels to Sub-Saharan Africa regularly to engage with HCP’s international partners in surgical skills transfer, cataract outreach campaigns, and development activities.
Dr. Welling is Lead Instructor of the Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS) Course at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). He is a member of the ASCRS Skills Transfer Sub-Committee.
Dr. Welling is a specialist in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery at Medical Eye Center, in Medford, Oregon, where he serves as Director of the Refractive Surgery Program.
