"Beating Blindness” - Isobel Yeung (@IsobelYeung)

Doctors and researchers are making incredible strides in the fight against blindness. New assistive technologies, such as the Argus II, and advances in surgical techniques mean that many patients who have lost sight entirely can now regain visual perception, and the independence that comes with it—a process that can be as disorienting as it is freeing. VICE's Isobel Yeung travels to Harar, Ethiopia to meet Dr. Matt Oliva of the Himalayan Cataract Project. While in Ethiopia, Isobel shadows Dr. Oliva and the surgical team as they perform nearly 700 surgeries over the course of a week. Then, back in the U.S., Isobel meets Anthony Andreottola, one of the first few hundred patients to receive the Argus II, the first retinal implant - or bionic eye - approved by the FDA.

Don’t miss this episode of VICE as Isobel Yeung reports from the front lines of this latest medical frontier.
