Training Advances Skills for NCOP team
Ghana Health Service’s team members are delivering modular training workshops to optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and technicians who are part of HCP’s network of implementing partners.
These workshops are part of the National Cataract Outreach Program (NCOP)’s long-term goal of establishing a sustainable outreach program that will make high quality care accessible to all Ghanaians by increasing the ophthalmic capacity of cataract service providers, regardless of their ability to pay.
The first two training workshops were completed in March and April, with the third planned for May in Tamale. Aimed at strengthening regional eye care competency, the four-to-five day training modules are led by Ghana Health Service team members Dr. James Addy, Head of the Eye Care Unit and National Coordinator for the Prevention of Blindness; Gifty Boafo, Program Coordinator; Agatha Mensah-Debrah, optometrist; and Daniel Dankyi, ophthalmic nurse.
The first session in March covered Operating Theatre Procedures as well as Biometry (measurements of eye health and vision) in Koforidua and included 10 professionals from five partner institutions. In total, the three sessions will help to boost the eye care knowledge of 24 professionals at 12 partner institutions. Each of the partner institutions nominated two people to participate in the trainings.
