She Thought She'd Never See Again

Jul 28, 2026 | news |

Letenkol, 82, had been living in darkness for a year. Her son Tesfay brought her to the outreach after hearing an announcement in their village of free eye care services provided by Cure Blindness Project.

“For the past year, I’ve been helping my mother with everything,” Tesfay shared. “She stopped going to church, couldn’t use the toilet on her own, and never left the house. It was heartbreaking to see her like that.”

Letenkol echoed his sentiments, “I was very sad staying at home. My son and his children helped me with everything.”

Thanks to the outreach program, Letenkol underwent successful surgery and regained her sight in both eyes. In the post-operative ward, as the bandages were gently removed, she looked around in awe and exclaimed:
“Where did this beautiful light go! It is beautiful—thank you for giving me back my sight!”

Her joy was immediate, a moment of transformation not just for her, but for her entire family.
