Residency Rotation at Tamale Teaching Hospital in Northern Region, Ghana

KATH 3rd year resident, Dr. Esinam Vittor Boateng, spent three weeks training in small incision cataract surgical technique with HCP partner Dr. Judith Simon at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) in the Northern Region of Ghana. During her time there, Dr. Boateng completed a total of 15 cataract and, 2 pterygium surgeries, 1 corneal repair and conjunctival flap, and 3 excision biopsies. In addition to the surgeries, the two doctors worked together in the consulting room and analyzed a variety of cases.

This residency rotation is part of a larger ophthalmology training exchange program between the three major teaching hospitals in Ghana: KATH, TTH and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The goal is to provide residents with exposure to a variety of eye conditions, surgical procedures and clinical environments during their ophthalmology training.

Dr. Boateng appreciated Dr. Simon’s approach to problem solving and case management. She also stated that Dr. Simon has “been of immense help to the community and deserves to be celebrated.” Dr. Boateng thanks the sponsors for their commitment to the program and hopes to return to TTH in the near future.
