Reflecting on 2016

Jan 01, 2017 | news |

Happy New Year from all of us at the Himalayan Cataract Project! Thank you again for your commitment to our work. Last year, together with our partners, we screened and treated nearly 1 million people, supported training opportunities for over 100 eye care providers, and provided specialized eye care equipment in areas of great need. We could not have done this without you.

Here are some of our 2016 highlights:

  • HCP’s training program provided educational opportunities for 130 ophthalmic personnel from 8 countries, a 60% increase over the 79 individuals trained in 2015. Trainings provided included observerships, hands-on sub-specialty training, residency rotations, short-course nurse and optometrist trainings, in-country workshops, and international conferences.
  • HCP provided approximately $1.5M in ophthalmic equipment to our partners in 2016.
  • NEPAL: Our partners at the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, including co-founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit, conducted 23 outreach cataract surgical events throughout Nepal as well as 7 campaigns internationally in Myanmar, India, and Bhutan. Surgeries performed at Tilganga and its network totalled 27,718. Tilganga is a world-renowned training institute, and continues to increase its output of skilled ophthalmic personnel through long- and short-term training courses.
  • ETHIOPIA: Surgical numbers in Ethiopia reached an all-time high with 12,353 HCP-supported surgeries provided through 29 outreach campaigns in 2016 - a 38% increase over the 8,071 surgeries performed over 15 campaigns in 2015.
  • GHANA: Our partners at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi increased their total surgical volume by 38% over 2015, providing 2,424 surgeries. Additional partnerships with Operation Eyesight Universal and Tamale Teaching Hospital yielded another 800+ surgeries.

We could not do this without your support, thank you.
