Phacoemulsification Workshop in Ghana
HCP Volunteer Ophthalmologist, Dr. John Pajka provides Phaco Training at KATH
Training has always been a central part to the work of the HCP, recognizing that quality surgery is integral to combating needless blindness and that the majority of surgery must be performed by local personnel. This perspective underlies our every effort to train local providers at all levels – from sub-specialty ophthalmologists to nurses to equipment technicians - and to establish a viable eye care infrastructure.
To-date this year in Ghana, HCP has supported in-house workshops on cornea and cataract surgery techniques at partner institutions with subject matter for residents as well as practicing ophthalmologists. In May, HCP supported an oculoplastics workshop and a phacoemulsification (cataract surgery technique) workshop with volunteer ophthalmologist Dr. John Pajka.
Participating in this training were doctors from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital; Dr. Akwasi Ahmed, Dr. Angelina Ampong and Dr. Amos Aikins. Over the course of four surgical days, Dr. Pajka focused on the importance of high quality surgery allowing each doctor to work 8-9 cases.
