Ophthalmology Residents in Ghana Recognized for Achievement
Ghanaian Residents who passed their ICO Exams were presented with Ophthalmic Equipment Kits as reward for successful completion of tests
Seven residents from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and two residents from Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana were awarded ophthalmic equipment kits after successful completion of both International Council of Ophthalmology’s (ICO) Basic Science and Optics and Refractive exams. The basic equipment kits were provided by the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) and included diagnostic equipment, basic lenses and a tray for tools to further each resident’s training skills.
The kits were presented by the President of the Ophthalmological Society of Ghana, Dr. Michael Gyasi, and HCP Ghana Country Representative, Dr. Oscar Debra, during two small ceremonies recognizing the hard work and efforts by residents Dr. Gifty Adom, Dr. Mildred Aleser, Dr. Prince Amissah, Dr. Esinam Ayisi-Boateng, Dr. Joseph Kwarteng, Dr. Akosua Mensa-Bonsu, and Dr. Nina Tiertoore of KATH and Dr. Kwaku Kwarteng and Dr. John Mattia of Korle Bu.
An integral piece of HCP's overall mission is to strengthen ophthalmology education programs within the countries we work. We accomplish this by providing education and training opportunities to produce highly-skilled and trained doctors to meet the demands of eye care needs in their countries.
In 2017, HCP directly supported 28 total training opportunities for ophthalmic professionals in all areas - more than any year in Ghana to date!
