Matching Campaign Raises $182,867 for Sight-Restoring Surgeries

Jun 30, 2021 | news |

The Himalayan Cataract Project marked National Cataract Awareness Month with a successful matching campaign and cataract outreach work in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Tanzania.

All of us at HCP are so grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support for our matching campaign! Thanks to the support of our donors, the campaign was a huge success - raising over $182,800!

The campaign helped HCP teams and local partners provide sight-restoring surgeries and specialized ophthalmic training.

Teams sometimes worked 12 hour days to restore sight to hundreds waiting for care. The month started in Ghana where Dr. John Welling led an outreach effort in Koforidua during which 230 sight-restoring surgeries were performed. HCP teams worked closely with doctors from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Eastern Regional Hospital at Koforidua to help eye care professionals from those institutions better refine their skills.

HCP Co-founder Dr. Geoff Tabin and Board member Dr. Jeff Goldberg worked with partners in Kenya and Tanzania to provide specialty training in cornea and glaucoma. They worked closely with Dr. Dan Kiage and a host of ophthalmologists from across the country in Kisii, Kenya and then with Dr. Elisante Jackson Muna and a team at the KCMC Eye Clinic in Moshi, Tanzania.

Trainees learned surgical skills and worked on many complex and challenging cases. Building in-country capacity to provide eye care on all levels is essential to our goal to ensure accessible, sustainable care in the countries where we work.

Thank you for helping us reach even more people with curable blindness in these countries and beyond!

We would also like to recognize and thank the incredible friends who provided the matching funds for our campaign. Thank you for being the kind of people to inspire such generosity in others. The success of our campaign would not have been possible without you!

We are so grateful to our wonderful community for helping so many people waiting for care. Together, we are turning the tide of needless and preventable global blindness.

Join us in curing avoidable blindness around the world
