Mamush Overcomes Homelessness and Blindness
Mamush endured profound hardship after losing his sight in both eyes. For five years, his life unraveled completely.
Previously employed as a driver's assistant and cashier at a local bus station, he lost everything—his job, income, and eventually his home. With nowhere to turn, Mamush survived on the streets, sleeping rough and depending on strangers' kindness for food.
Having been separated from his family since age 15, Mamush faced his blindness entirely alone.
"I was heartbroken," he recalls. "Some friends would joke about my condition, which only deepened my pain."
Yet even in his darkest moments, hope appeared. A few compassionate people offered shelter and support. When they learned about a Cure Blindness Project outreach at Bisidimo Hospital, they helped Mamush make the journey there.
Under the skilled care of Cure Blindness Project partner Dr. Yonas, Mamush received sight-restoring surgery. The outcome was miraculous—his vision restored completely.
"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw again," Mamush said, overwhelmed with emotion. "Seeing people, trees, and mountains—it was like discovering a new world. I didn't care about food or drink anymore. Regaining my sight felt like being reborn. Losing my sight was like being buried alive."
His friend Tesfaye Mulu shared in the joy:
"We were all devastated by Mamush's blindness. Now, thanks to God and the incredible medical team, my friend can see again. I called all our friends to share the news—everyone is overjoyed."
Mamush's story powerfully demonstrates how sight-restoring surgery transforms not just vision, but also restores dignity, independence, and hope.
