Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founder Receives Prime Minister National Talent Award
Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit received the esteemed Tulsi Meher Social Service Award for his outstanding work in the field of ophthalmology.
The award was administered by the Social Welfare Council in Nepal; an organization that, according to their website, promotes, facilitates, coordinates, monitors, and evaluates the activities of the non-governmental organizations in Nepal.
The award was administered on the 40th anniversary of Social Service Day and presented to Dr. Ruit by President Bidya Devi Bhandari of Nepal. President Bhandari stated Dr. Ruit was a “shining star in the field of ophthalmology.” President Bhandari went on to say she, “wishes to see [Ruit] engage in more research projects and inventions in the days ahead.”
Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit’s sole mission has been, and continues to be, to bring eyesight back to anyone who needs it, regardless of his or her ability to pay — and to do so with pre- and post-operative care that rivals the highest quality healthcare throughout the world.
In 1994, Dr. Ruit founded the Tilganga Eye Centre, now the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology. On average, Tilgaga treats 2,500 patients a week, waiving surgery fees for those unable to pay. At the award ceremony, Dr. Ruit stated the hospital has come up with new technology that will be extended to Asia, Africa, and South America.
