HCP Partners Chosen as IAPB 2018 Eye Health Heroes
Dr. Vera Essuman and Dr. Sadik Taju Sherief recognized for work by global eye health community
The International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) has named HCP Partners, Drs. Vera Essuman and Sadik Taju Sherief, as 2018 Eye Health Heroes in recognition of their services in the field of eye health and prevention of blindness in Ghana and Ethiopia respectively.
Dr. Essuman is a Senior Lecturer and Head of the Ophthalmology Unit, Department of Surgery, School of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana and a Pediatric Ophthalmologist/ Ophthalmic Surgeon at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. As the first pediatric ophthalmologist to be trained in Ghana, Dr. Essuman has been a pioneer in pediatric ophthalmology for the country since 2004.
Dr. Sherief is a Pediatrics and Strabismus Ophthalmologist, the Head of Ophthalmology at Menelik II Hospital in Addis Ababa and the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology in the School of Medicine at Addis Ababa University. Dr. Sadik led the HCP project: Improving Pediatric Eye Health in Ethiopia - supported by a grant through the USAID Child Blindness Program.
According to the IAPB website, "The Eye Health Heroes initiative recognizes and celebrates frontline staff whose work in the field and engagement with the community makes a real difference in restoring sight.Nominated by IAPB member organisations from within their ranks, or from their partner organisations, the nominated Heroes will be felicitated at the IAPB Council of Members Meeting in Hyderabad, India next month.View List of 2018 Eye Health Heroes
