HCP featured in The New York Times
This has been an extraordinary week for the Himalayan Cataract Project!
HCP was selected as a recipient of New York Times columnist and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas Kristof’s 2020 Holiday Impact Prize. The Holiday Impact Prize is awarded to nonprofits Kristof showcases in his annual “holiday gift guide.”
Since 2009, Nick Kristof has written an annual “holiday gift guide” column to bridge a philanthropic gap: readers who want to help but don't know how, and individuals and organizations who need resources but are off donors’ radar. The column helps raise the profiles of organizations that work on the very issues he covers in his journalism—health, education, human rights and women’s rights, both domestically and abroad.
Kristof’s 2020 Holiday Impact Prize is also a call to action for others to join him in supporting the work of the recipient organizations.
We are grateful to Nicholas Kristof for recognizing HCP with this award and shining light on the critical issue of needless cataract blindness in low-resource countries.

Nick Kristof first became interested in HCP’s work in 2015, when he traveled to Hetauda, Nepal to watch HCP Co-founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit perform sight-restoring surgeries. See Nick’s 2015 article and video of his trip here. “I’ve rarely seen anything so exhilarating,” said Nick of witnessing first-hand the transformative impact of restored sight.
