Giving Tuesday & The Power of Generosity

Nov 28, 2023 | news |

Supporters of HCP Cureblindness continue to show our team the power of generosity as their contributions transform lives in a meaningful, lasting way. As we enter the last months of 2023, we look forward to 2024 and the impact we can make together.

“The Development Team welcomes the flurry of activity that happens in Q4,” says Ruth Bolan, HCP’s Chief Development Officer. “More than 50-percent of our funding comes in November and December. Of that amount, 50-percent will arrive in the last two weeks of 2023.” This makes for a busy end of the year but HCP fundraisers are thrilled that our donors remember us during the holiday season.

The activity ramped up in mid-November with HCP’s Giving Tuesday campaign (November 16-28). This year, several donors collectively pledged to match dollar-for-dollar all donations up to $250,000 received during the campaign. We are happy to report that donations poured in allowing us to not only beat but exceed our goal and receive all matching funds.

These dollars will directly support programming in our core countries of Ghana, Ethiopia, India, Bhutan and Nepal in 2024 and ensure a bright, sight-restored future for patients across South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. We look forward to conversations with new partners to expand care even further in 2024.

In addition to receiving matching dollars, Giving Tuesday prompted many to utilize our new “tax-smart” giving options. These methods provide not only significant benefits to our cause but also potential tax advantages for the donor. (Visit www.cureblindness.org/donate/ways-to-give to learn more.)

“The new system for giving on the HCP Cureblindness website saved us time and paperwork in making this year's QCD. It was a simple process to transfer funds from our investment firm directly to HCP. For those of us over 73, this is the easiest, quickest way to make tax-advantaged donations from our IRAs,” report long-time HCP supporters Barbie and Chris Whorton.

The couple learned of HCP’s work after a successful cataract surgery performed by HCP board member Dr. Matt Oliva. “After surgery, I enjoyed a quality of life and vision that I had not experienced in years. Chris and I are committed to HCP as a way to share my gratitude to Dr. Oliva and to help other cataract patients see again,” says Barbie.
