Exchange Program Kicks Off

news | Oct 30, 2015

Oculoplastic surgeon and friend of HCP Dr. Morris Harstein was in Gondar, Ethiopia recently to organize an exchange program between the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Tel Aviv University and ophthalmology residents from Addis Ababa and Gondar.

The relationship built between Dr. Harstein and ophthalmologists in Ethiopia was fostered by the Himalayan Cataract Project.

This planned exchange program will provide advanced training in the Ophthalmology Department at Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.

While in Gondar, Dr. Harstein worked with Dr. Yared Assefa, Chief of Ophthalmology in Gondar. Together, they examined the eyes of over 100 people. Treatment included giving out eye drops, handing out over 70 pairs of reading glasses, and referring other patients to the Gondar eye hospital for cataract, eyelid, and strabismus surgery. Dr. Hartstein also made four house-calls to examine patients who could not make it to the compound for eye exams.

Dr. Hartstein is looking forward to the planned exchange program as well as a visit by Dr. Yared to Assaf Harofeh Medical Center.
