Enhanced Cataract Outreach in Ghana through Partnerships

Four Recent Outreaches Result in 688 Sight Restoring Surgeries in Ghana

In the past month, teams from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Tamale Teaching Hospital in Tamale, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra - aided in one instance by Master Trainer Dr. Govinda Paudyal from the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal - collectively provided a total of 688 sight restoring surgeries through four outreach cataract events.

Details of each outreach can be found below:

Sefwi-Waiwso/Juaboso: April 02 - 06

A team from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) led by HCP partners Dr. Amos Aikins and Dr. Angelina Ampong managed cataract outreaches in Sefwi-Waiwso and Juaboso providing 178 sight restoring surgeries.

Yegi: April 06 - 09

HCP partner Dr. Judith Simon and a team from Tamale Teaching Hospital led a three day outreach in Yegi, providing 47 sight restoring surgeries to this rural region.

Keta: April 22 - 27

HCP partners Dr. Billy Quaye, Dr. Gladys Fordjour, and Dr. Dziffa Ofori-Adjei led a team from Korle Bu during an outreach in Keta, located in the Volta Region of Ghana. The team provided 217 sight restoring surgeries.

Techiman: April 23 - 27


HCP Master Trainer and Head of the Academic and Training Department at the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal, Dr. Govinda Paudyal, HCP Partners Dr. Amos Aikins, Dr. Akwasi Ahmed, Dr. Osei Agyeman, and a team from Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) led a four day outreach in Yegi, providing 246 sight restoring surgeries.
