Curing Blindness in South Sudan
Since our work in South Sudan began in 2011, HCP Cureblindness has completed more than 9,800 sight-restoring surgeries together with our partners, and we have hosted 19 surgical outreaches to treat cataracts and trachomatous trichiasis.
HCP surgical outreaches present opportunities to transfer skills to in-country medical staff and increase in-country capacity to treat those in need of eye care.
After years of conflict with only a handful of eye care professionals serving a population of nearly 11 million people, most South Sudanese lack adequate access to eye care.
Most recently, HCP traveled to South Sudan in December 2023 with surgical outreaches in Aweil and Akon. In total, HCP performed 1,828 sight-restoring cataract surgeries.
