Then & Now: Full Circle Moment for Cure Blindness Project in Nepal
In our 30th anniversary year, join Cure Blindness Project as we reflect on our past while simultaneously looking towards our future. This monthly feature titled Then & Now will showcase how much we’ve accomplished, always with partners, in our mission to cure avoidable blindness.
In 1995 when the Himalayan Cataract Project began work in remote villages in Nepal, its co-founders dreamed of curing blindness for those suffering in this small, mountainous country. Work moved from village to village as volunteers worked in local communities to make a difference in individual lives.
This April, in a full circle moment, Cure Blindness Project leadership will address visionaries, policymakers, advocates and professionals from across the eye care sector at the IAPB 2030 IN SIGHT LIVE! in the country where it first began its work. 2030 IN SIGHT LIVE! is the flagship event of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). It will be held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
IAPB HEADING TO NEPAL
“The region has been at the forefront of groundbreaking eye care models, from community-driven outreach to innovative hospital networks that have inspired global strategies,” says IAPB. “However, due to rapid urbanization, aging populations, and changing lifestyles the demand for eye health services have increased in our region.”

The event will offer an opportunity for attendees (and their respective organizations) to connect, learn and influence the direction of eye health ahead of the Global Summit for Eye Health in 2026. It will:
- Elevate eye care globally by bringing together top-level policy makers, health leaders and funders to drive global eye health commitments with a focus on regional impact.
- Allow for in-depth discussions between key players on integrating eye health into national health agendas, tackling barriers to universal eye care and shaping policies for Southeast Asia’s diverse populations.
- Offer workshops and masterclasses for leaders to build advocacy strategies and engage communities.
Cure Blindness Project leaders will present research and data, learn from fellow experts in the vision care sector, and forge meaningful partnerships to help advance our mission to eliminate avoidable blindness around the world.
