Chairman Dr. Geoff Tabin is interviewed by Denver Frederick, the Host of The Business of Giving, as part of a series of interviews with MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change Semi-Finalists.

The program is the only show of its kind that focuses on solutions to today's complex social problems. What's working? Who are the changemakers? How is it all being financed? The program addresses issues such as global poverty, affordable housing, clean drinking water, medical breakthroughs, and matters related to education.

The interview starts with a discussion on the HCP’s founding, our early work in Nepal, what we’ve accomplished since, and the impact of blindness in the developing world. Dr. Tabin then discusses how the 100&Change grant would allow HCP to “break the back of needless blindness” in Sub-Saharan Africa, show that we can create a sustaining eye care model, and enhance training programs in south Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa to dramatically change eye care.

Listen to the 25-minute interview.

The big thing we do is developing the system – its really training, teaching, and empowering the local doctors, but also creating the system with training the nurses, technicians and assistants. When we began in Nepal, people didn’t know they could get have their sight restored. It was just accepted, you get old, your hair turns white, your eyes turn white and then you die. It wasn’t just a matter of teaching a man to fish, we had to teach how to sell the fish.
