A Story of Hope from Recent Efforts

news | Ethiopia | Ghana | Aug 31, 2020

A number of HCP’s partners have resumed moderate cataract surgical outreach after the threat of COVID-19 temporarily paused outreach activities earlier this year. Five partners in Ghana and three in Ethiopia are performing surgeries in smaller volumes. Low-volume events are in keeping with new protocols to ensure safety of patients and health care workers.

The result of resumed surgical outreach means those who have been waiting for care may experience the joy of regaining their sight.

Below is a patient story from the field that highlights the impact that you’ve made on the lives of our patients.

Name: Gidey Fekadu & Letegebriel Enday

Location: Adigrat, Ethiopia

Gidey Fekadu is a farmer from Ethiopia who recently had his sight restored. When he lost his vision, Gidey was no longer able to farm and earn an income. He tried renting his land to others but was barely getting by. Gidey’s wife, Letegebriel Enday, had also lost her vision. She couldn’t prepare meals or care for their farm, and the couple was unable to attend church. They thought they couldn’t afford eye care, so their vision problems persisted for four years, worsening every day.

Gidey and Letegebriel heard about HCP’s work and attended an outreach event. They received life-changing surgery at no cost thanks to our partners in Ethiopia and the compassionate generosity of HCP’s community of supporters.

Gidey was surprised and grateful for his surgery. “It is an amazing miracle for my sight restoration,” Gidey said. “Now I can differentiate things and there will not be any difficulties in my farming activities. I will share this service to my friends who need it.”

Gidey and Letegebriel are looking forward to returning to farming, to their church community, and to living independently now that their sight is restored. Thank you for making their miracle possible.
