A Blind Mother Raising Her Kids Alone

Aug 28, 2025 | news | South Sudan |

Abandoned by her husband and working through the grief of losing a child, Mary, 35, from South Sudan, faced the daunting task of raising her three remaining children as a single, blind mother.

Her inability to see stripped her of opportunities to provide for her remaining children, two daughters and son. "By the end of 2023, I started experiencing severe allergies and pain in my left eye," she explained, "After a while, I slowly developed the feelings of allergy and pain in my right eye. My vision reduced, so I could not see things from afar, and it continued for a few months. Until I lost all my vision in both eyes in October 2024 and became completely blind for 8 months."

I lost all my vision in both eyes. . . and became completely blind. Mary, 35-year-old mother from South Sudan

Blindness Took Her Independence, but Not Her Will

Daily life became very hard with everyday household tasks feeling impossible. "I could not do home activities anymore, like cooking and washing clothes and utensils." Her livelihood vanished. "Furthermore, it was so difficult for me to continue with the activities of agriculture and making local alcohol due to the visual impairment. The blindness has made me poor."

The social isolation was crushing. "Even my husband left me alone with the children after I went blind. I used to receive a lot of bad words, insults, disrespect, and bad treatment from the people around me."

During her darkest days, her older sister became her lifeline, assisting with cooking and caring for her and her children. Her young children also stepped up, helping with chores and guiding her. Accessing medical care was another hurdle. "I was not able to get to the hospital for treatment due to the insecurity and flooding in the areas where I live during the rainy season."

Hope came after a family member in Aweil who told her about an eye care outreach. Her brother-in-law arranged transportation, a precious gift for someone with no means.

The Gift of Sight Brings Back Hope

After her blindness was cured, Mary is now full of hope.

Now, with the possibility brought with sight restored, Mary's hopes are simple yet profound. "Once I am able to see again. Firstly, I hope for good health, especially my eye health. I really want to see clearly like before. Secondly, I would like to do my home activities such as cooking, washing clothes, cleaning the house, and taking care of myself and my children. Thirdly, I am looking forward to resuming my activities of agriculture and brewing local alcohol to earn some money to continue feeding and supporting the education of my children."

The thought of reuniting with her family with her sight intact fills her with emotion. "My father is very happy that I am able to see him again, and I was unhappy with the health status of my father, who is sick and admitted to the hospital in Aweil. Moreover, my children, elder sister, and close family members and relatives will be happy too for my restored vision."

“I will not forget the people who helped me during the period of blindness and my hard times as well. May God protect, guide, and bless them,” she says with a smile, a smile that holds the promise of a brighter, sighted future and heartfelt thanks.
